BRICK STAINING, NOT BRICK PAINTING — HERE'S THE DIFFERENCE

Paint sits on top of the brick as a film. It traps moisture, and in a Toronto freeze-thaw winter that film blisters and peels within a few years. Brick stain is different: it penetrates the brick and colours it from within. The brick keeps breathing, the texture stays natural, and the colour becomes part of the masonry.

The result is a permanent finish that won't peel, chip or fade, with no maintenance cycle. Go from orange 1970s brick to a modern charcoal or warm white, tone down a patchy repair, refresh an interior fireplace or accent wall, or stain the mortar too for a uniform look. We apply test patches on your own brick before the full job so you see the real colour first.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN EVERY BRICK STAINING PROJECT:

Colour test patches. Before the full job we apply two or three colours directly on an inconspicuous spot of your brick and let you choose once they're dry — stain reads differently on every brick.

Cleaning and prep. The brick is washed to remove dirt, efflorescence and any old sealer, loose mortar is repointed, and the wall is left to dry fully. Stain only bonds to clean, bare, dry masonry, so this step is never skipped.
Masking and protection. Windows, doors, siding, soffits, walkways and plants are covered. Stain is permanent on anything it touches, so we mask more carefully than painters do.

Application and walkthrough. Stain is applied brick by brick, by hand, so the finish looks like natural coloured brick rather than a painted wall. Mortar lines are stained or left natural — your choice. We finish with a walkthrough and clean-up. WSIB registered, $5M liability insured.

3 steps to a new brick colour

A typical house front takes 1–2 days; a full exterior, 3–5 days depending on size and weather. Exterior staining needs dry brick and temperatures above 5°C, so book early for spring and fall slots. Interior fireplaces and accent walls can be done year-round.

1. Site visit & quote

We inspect the brick and mortar, confirm it's unpainted and unsealed, measure the area, and give you a written quote with the scope and timeline.

2. Colour test patches

Once the quote is approved we apply two or three colours on a hidden spot of your wall. You pick the colour when they're dry and decide whether the mortar is stained too.

3. Prep & staining

Wash, repoint, mask, then stain brick by brick. We clean up, remove masking and walk you through the finished wall.

Questions & answers

1. Brick staining vs painting — which is better?

Staining, for almost every brick surface. Paint forms a film that traps moisture and peels in Toronto's freeze-thaw cycles, so you're repainting every 5–7 years. Penetrating stain colours the brick from within, keeps it breathable, never peels, and keeps the natural brick texture. Paint only makes sense if the brick is already painted and can't be stripped.

2. How long does brick stain last?

For the life of the brick. Because the stain bonds inside the masonry rather than sitting on top, there is nothing to peel, chip or flake, and UV fading is minimal. You won't need to re-stain or maintain it the way you would paint.

3. Can you stain brick that has already been painted or sealed?

Not directly — stain needs bare, porous brick to soak in. Painted or sealed brick has to be stripped first, which we can quote separately. Unpainted brick, stone and concrete block all take stain well. We confirm this with a water-absorption test at the site visit.

4. What colours can I choose, and will it look painted?

Anything from a subtle tone shift to a full change — charcoal, black, white, warm grey, red and brown are the most requested. The stain is applied brick by brick and is semi-translucent, so the natural variation and texture of the brick show through. It looks like the house was built with that brick, not painted. We apply test patches on your wall before you commit.
