Our 4-step deck and fence renewal process
1. Eco Wood Cleaner AND BRIGHTENER
We apply a professional-grade cleaner that lifts grey oxidation, mildew, algae and tannin stains and restores the wood to its natural colour. It also handles mill glaze and rust marks that a pressure washer alone leaves behind.
2. Washing, when the job needs it
Not every deck or fence gets washed. On each job we decide whether it is better to pressure wash and then sand, or only sand, based on the size of the project, the style of the deck or fence, the weather in the forecast and the finish you want. When we do wash, we use a wide fan nozzle at low pressure made for softwood, never a blast that fibres the surface.
3. Sanding
Once the wood is fully dry, we sand every peeling or rough area smooth. On decks, that means handrails, treads and the high-traffic boards. This is the step most companies skip and the reason their stain peels the following spring.
4. Staining or sealing
We apply premium water- or oil-based stains in the opacity you choose — transparent, semi-transparent or solid — and protect your plants, interlock and your neighbour's property with tarps before we start.

Their quote was competitive, and they accommodated our request to use Cutek Extreme oil based stain. The team did a great job replacing several damaged deck planks, power washing the deck with detergent wash, sanding every square inch of the deck using a variety of sanding equipment, and then stained the deck . Deck staining, refinishing & fence renewal: questions & answers
How long does deck stain last in Ontario?
Semi-transparent stains typically last 2–3 years on horizontal surfaces and 4–5 years on fences before they need a maintenance coat. Solid stains last longer but must be sanded rather than recoated when they fail. Freeze-thaw cycles and south-facing exposure shorten the interval.
Stain or paint — which is better for a deck?
Stain. Paint forms a film on top of the wood, and Toronto's freeze-thaw cycle drives water underneath it until it peels. Stain penetrates the fibres and wears gradually, so maintenance is a wash and recoat instead of a full strip.
What's the best time of year to stain a deck or fence?
April through October, with wood moisture under 17% and no rain during the day before and after application. We schedule around the forecast and won't stain wet wood.
Do you pressure wash, sand, or both?
It depends on the job. We look at every deck and fence first and decide whether it should be pressure washed and then sanded, or only sanded. That choice depends on the size of the project, the style of the deck or fence, the weather in the forecast and the result you want. Either way, sanding is what stops the new stain from peeling.
How long does the job take?
Most decks and fences take one to two days; larger or heavily peeling projects take longer. We prep the wood first and stain once it is clean and dry.
Do you only work in Toronto, or also Vaughan, Markham and Aurora?
Toronto is our main market, and we cover the whole GTA — Richmond Hill, Vaughan, Markham, Thornhill, Aurora and Newmarket. We also travel further for interesting projects.
How long should new pressure-treated wood dry before staining?
New pressure-treated lumber is still wet from the treatment, so it can't absorb stain right away. It usually needs several weeks to a few months, depending on sun and season. A simple test: sprinkle water on a board. If it beads, the wood isn't ready; if it soaks in, it is. We check moisture before we stain.
Do I need to be home while you work?
No. We only need access to the yard and pets kept inside while we work. We confirm the details with you when we book the day.
What does the 3-year warranty cover?
Every deck and fence staining job comes with a 3-year non-peeling warranty. If the stain we applied peels within three years, we come back and fix it. Ask us for the full terms when we quote.
Do you stain pergolas, gazebos and porches too?
Yes. The same clean, sand and stain process works on pergolas, gazebos, porches, stairs, railings, privacy screens and sheds. We often renew them together with the deck or fence.
