Two-Level Deck Refinished in Rich Cedar in Richmond Hill
A large two-level deck behind a Richmond Hill home, with a lower platform and wraparound steps onto the patio, an upper level with black baluster railings and board skirting, its old stain worn and peeling. We protected the patio, sanded the whole deck back to fresh wood and refinished it in a rich cedar stain.

The deck: two levels with a worn, peeling finish
This large deck runs along the back of a Richmond Hill home in two levels: a lower platform at the side door with wide wraparound steps down to the interlock patio, and an upper level with wood railings, black metal balusters and board skirting. The old golden stain had worn off in the traffic areas and was peeling on the steps and edges, leaving the deck patchy and uneven.
Protecting the patio and sanding
Before starting, our crew covered the interlock patio with plastic and taped the edges so no dust or stain would reach the stone. We then sanded both levels, the wraparound steps, the railings and the skirting back to clean, fresh wood, as the sanded photo shows.
Rich cedar stain
We finished the whole deck in a rich cedar stain: deck boards and steps on both levels, the railing posts, rails and caps, and the skirting. The warm, deep colour brings out the grain, contrasts nicely with the black balusters and the grey patio, and gives the two levels one consistent look.
The result
A large, warm-toned deck that looks brand new from the patio to the upper level, with no peeling and a finish that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat every few years.
