Black Deck Back to Natural Cedar in Woodbridge
A multi-level deck with glass railings and wraparound stairs in Woodbridge, its black solid stain peeling and worn grey on every step. We sanded off the black coating and refinished the deck in a natural cedar tone, with the railings, posts and skirting in a matching warm colour.

The deck: black stain peeling and worn through
This multi-level deck in Woodbridge has an upper level at the patio doors, a lower level, wraparound stairs down to the interlock patio, a bar-height ledge and glass railings. It had been coated in a black solid stain, and on the boards and stairs that coating was badly worn: peeling and flaking everywhere people walk, with grey, weathered wood showing through on every step.
Sanding off the black coating
Going from black back to a natural wood colour means the old coating has to come off completely. We sanded the deck boards, stair treads and edges on both levels back to bare wood, and sanded down the railing posts, rails and skirting to take the new finish. The sanding photo shows the clean boards against the old black frame.
Natural cedar finish
The deck boards and stair treads were stained in a natural cedar tone that shows off the grain, and the posts, railings, risers, fascia and skirting were refinished in a matching warm colour. The glass railing panels stay clear, and the whole deck now reads as one warm, natural structure next to the interlock patio and the stone landscaping.
The result
A bright, natural-looking deck that matches the house and the landscaping, with no peeling and a finish that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat every few years.
