Two-Level Deck and Staircase Stained in Ajax
A large two-level deck in Ajax: an upper deck with black baluster railings and a staircase down to a covered lower deck and patio steps. After testing stain colours on the boards, we stained the deck in a warm cedar tone, protecting the bare wood from sun and rain.

The deck: bare, unprotected wood
This large two-level deck sits behind a brick home in Ajax: an upper deck off the main floor with wood railings and black metal balusters, a long staircase down to a covered lower deck at the walkout, and wide wrap-around steps onto the lawn. The wood was bare and unprotected, already turning pale and grey in places, and needed a stain to protect it from sun, rain and winter.
Choosing the colour
Before staining, we brushed out test samples right on the deck boards so the owners could see each colour on their own wood in daylight, including Cordova, Tupelo Honey and Yukon tones. Seeing the real colour on site takes the guesswork out of choosing a stain.
Staining the deck
We then stained the deck in a warm cedar tone: the upper deck boards, railing posts, rails and caps, the staircase stringers, treads and handrails, the support posts and the fascia. The warm colour brings out the grain, contrasts nicely with the black balusters and suits the red brick of the house.
The result
A rich, even, protected deck from the top railing to the bottom step, with a penetrating finish that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat every few years.
