Grey Mildewed Deck Restored in Cedar in Aurora

The deck: grey, weathered and green with mildew

This raised deck sits at the sliding door of a brick bungalow in Aurora, with a wide set of stairs down to the patio, wood railings with square pickets and vertical board skirting around the base. Years of weather had turned the wood grey, and the stair treads, handrails and railings were covered in green mildew and algae, which also makes the stairs slippery when wet.

Wood cleaner and power washing

We applied a wood cleaner to the deck boards, stairs, railings and skirting to break down the mildew, dirt and old weathered stain, then power washed everything. Washing brought back the wood's natural colour and left clean, open wood ready to absorb stain, as the washed photo of the railings and skirting shows.

Warm cedar stain

Once the wood had dried, we stained the entire structure in a warm cedar tone: the deck surface, every stair tread and riser, the handrails, railings and pickets, and all of the skirting. The stain brings out the grain and gives the whole deck one even, rich colour that looks great against the grey brick.

The result

A clean, safe set of stairs and a deck that looks almost new again, protected from moisture and mildew, with a finish that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat every few years.
