Deck & Gazebo Restored by the Pool in Bolton
A pool-side deck in Bolton with a timber gazebo, wood railings and a step down to the walkway. The deck stain was peeling and the gazebo had weathered to grey; we sanded the deck, railings and gazebo timbers to bare wood and refinished everything in a warm oil-based stain.

The deck: a gazebo, a pool and a stain that had failed
This Bolton backyard is set up for summer: a deck off the side of the house with a timber-frame gazebo over it, wood railings with black metal balusters, a step down to the walkway and the pool just beyond. The deck had been stained before, but the finish was peeling in strips across the floor and wearing through to grey in the walking areas. The gazebo was worse: its posts, beams and curved brackets had weathered to a flat silver-grey, so the structure looked older than the house. The owners wanted the deck and gazebo to match again.
Sanding the deck, railings and gazebo timbers
A peeling stain has to come off completely, and grey wood has to be sanded back before it will take colour. We sanded the deck floor, the step, the landing and the wood railings to bare wood, and sanded the gazebo posts, beams and brackets back from grey to clean timber, protecting the metal balusters and the gazebo roof. The during photo shows the job halfway: the floor sanded to pale wood and the gazebo posts back to their natural colour. This preparation is what any deck restoration depends on.
Warm oil-based stain on everything
The deck, railings and gazebo were finished in a warm oil-based penetrating stain. Oil soaks into the wood rather than forming a film, so the floor by the pool, which takes sun, splash and bare feet, will wear gradually instead of peeling again. The gazebo timbers took a matching warm tone, so in the after photo the posts, curved brackets, beams, railings and floor read as one piece of woodwork glowing in the evening sun.
The result
A pool-side deck and gazebo that look like they were built together, ready for the season. Maintenance from here is a wash and a refresh coat when the colour softens, no stripping.
