Deck & Fence Sanded and Stained Together in Brampton

The deck and fence: two finishes that had both failed

This Brampton backyard has a raised deck off the house with a privacy fence running behind it. The deck had been coated in a brown solid stain that was faded, chalky and worn thin, and the fence had never been finished at all, so it had gone grey and streaky. The railings were a mix of brown posts and white balusters that had started to peel. Nothing matched, and the owners wanted the whole corner of the yard to look like one piece.

Sanding the deck and the fence

We sanded the deck floor, the rim boards and the skirting back to bare wood, taking the old solid stain off completely, and sanded the fence back from grey to clean wood on the deck side. The middle photo shows both at that stage: the deck and fence the same pale colour, ready to take stain evenly. Doing the deck and fence on the same visit means the stain goes onto both from the same starting point, so they come out matching instead of close.

One warm stain for deck and fence

The deck, skirting and fence were finished in a warm oil-based penetrating stain. Unlike the solid coating that was on the deck before, it soaks into the wood and wears gradually rather than peeling, and the grain shows through. The railings were refinished in a solid brown, posts and balusters alike, so the white is gone and the railings frame the warm floor. The after photo, taken in the evening light, shows the deck and fence reading as one finished space.

The result

A deck and fence that finally match, with railings that tie them together. Going forward, both get a wash and a maintenance coat at the same time, which keeps them matching for years.
