Two-Tone Grey Deck Refinished in Brampton
A Brampton backyard deck with a peeling grey stain, sanded completely to bare wood and refinished in a two-tone scheme: light grey Sherwin-Williams solid stain on the floor with dark espresso railings and posts.

The deck: a grey finish that wouldn't stay put
This Brampton backyard deck is the family's dining room for half the year — table, loungers, planters, an outdoor rug. It had been stained grey to match the modern look of the house, which was the right idea, but the stain itself had failed. By the time we saw it the floor was peeling in strips, flaking under the furniture legs and wearing through to bare wood where people walk. A grey deck that is peeling looks worse than a brown one, because every chip shows as a bright patch of raw wood. The owners wanted the grey back, done properly, and they wanted the railings to look like a deliberate design choice instead of an afterthought.
Sanding the old stain off completely
Peeling stain cannot be patched or recoated; the new coat only holds as well as the old one underneath. So we sanded the entire deck floor back to bare wood — every board, every edge, the area under the door threshold where coatings always hang on. The during photo shows the floor at that stage: clean, uniform, pale pressure-treated wood with no trace of the old grey. This is the step that decides how long the new finish lasts, and it is the step that gets skipped when a deck peels again two summers later. It is the core of our deck restoration service.
A two-tone scheme: light grey floor, dark railings
With the wood bare, the owners chose a two-tone finish. The floor got a Sherwin-Williams solid-colour deck stain in a light, cool grey — a solid stain, because the goal was a clean, uniform modern colour rather than visible grain, and because applied to properly sanded bare wood a quality solid stain is a durable, long-lasting finish. The railings, posts and caps were done in a dark espresso, which frames the light floor, hides handprints and matches the black solar post-cap lights. In the during photo the railings are already finished while the floor is still bare: we do the vertical surfaces first so no dark drips land on the finished floor.
The result
A deck that looks designed rather than repaired: a smooth light-grey floor, crisp dark railings, and a finish that will take a maintenance coat rather than a strip when it eventually dulls. Same boards, same frame — the difference is the preparation and the colour choice.
