Peeling Grey Deck Refinished Dark Brown in Etobicoke
A deck with a pergola and privacy screen behind a stone home in Etobicoke, its dark grey solid stain peeling and worn through. We sanded the deck boards back to bare wood and refinished them in a rich dark brown penetrating stain that shows the grain.

The deck: dark grey solid stain peeling off
This deck sits at the double doors of a stone home in Etobicoke, with a pergola, a black horizontal privacy screen and wood railings with black balusters. The deck boards had been coated in a dark grey solid stain that had failed: it was peeling and worn through in the traffic areas, with raw wood showing at the edges and steps, and the whole surface looked patchy.
Sanding to bare wood
A solid stain that is already peeling cannot be fixed with another coat, so we sanded every deck board back to bare, clean wood, removing the old grey coating completely.
Rich dark brown penetrating stain
On the fresh wood we applied a rich dark brown penetrating stain. The process photo shows the difference halfway through: freshly sanded bare wood on one side, the new stain on the other. Instead of hiding the wood under a film like the old grey coating, the new stain soaks in and brings out the grain and knots, and it will not peel.
The result
A warm, rich deck surface that suits the stone and the black privacy screen, with no peeling and a finish that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat every few years.
