Grey Deck Restored in Grey-Brown in Etobicoke

A large ground-level pressure-treated deck in Etobicoke, weathered grey with dark water stains. We power washed and sanded it to bare wood, tested six stain colours on the boards with the homeowner, then refinished the whole deck in the chosen grey-brown oil-based stain.

The deck: grey, stained and drying out

This is a wide ground-level deck in an Etobicoke backyard, built from pressure-treated boards and framed by a tall privacy fence and a built-in planter box. Years of sun and rain had turned the boards silver-grey, with dark water stains and mildew where the tree shade kept the surface damp. The framing and boards were still solid, so it was a restoration job, not a rebuild.

Pressure washing

We started with a full pressure wash to strip the grey surface layer, dirt and mildew. Even wet, the photo shows how much of the original wood colour was still under the weathering. The deck was then left to dry fully before sanding.

Sanding to bare wood

Every board was sanded to remove the raised grain left by washing and the last of the weathered fibres, leaving clean, bare wood that takes stain evenly. Good prep is what makes a deck staining job last instead of blotching in the first season.

Testing stain colours on the deck

Colour on a can lid never looks the same as colour on your own wood. We brushed six sample colours directly onto the sanded boards, from light cedar and honey tones to reddish brown, dark brown and a grey-brown, so the homeowner could see each one on the real deck, in their own light, before choosing.

Grey-brown oil-based stain

The homeowner picked the grey-brown. We applied it as a penetrating oil-based stain across the whole deck, including the board ends and the fascia. It soaks into the wood instead of forming a film, so it will not peel, and the grain still shows through. The modern grey-brown tone pairs well with the grey patio stones around the deck.

The result

An even, modern colour across the full deck, with the wood protected from UV and moisture again. Upkeep from here is a wash and a maintenance coat every couple of years.
