Mildewed Lattice Fence Restored in Etobicoke

The fence: grey, green and tired

This spaced-board wood fence with a square lattice topper runs the full length of a narrow side yard in Etobicoke, between two houses and under tall trees. With so little sun reaching it, the wood had gone silver-grey and the lower boards, posts and rails were covered in green mildew and algae. The fence was still straight and solid. It just looked neglected next to a beautiful home.

Wood cleaner and power washing

We applied a wood cleaner to the whole fence, both the boards and the lattice, and let it work on the mildew, algae and grey surface fibres. Then we power washed everything at a controlled pressure, so the grime came off without tearing up the soft grain. The middle photo shows the fence right after washing: the green is gone and the natural wood colour is back, still wet from the rinse.

Cedar-tone stain

Once the wood was fully dry, we stained the fence in a warm cedar tone, including the lattice, posts, caps and rails. A penetrating stain soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top, so it will not peel, and it protects the boards from UV and moisture, which matters most on a shady side yard where mildew comes back fast on bare wood. It is the same process we use for fence and deck staining across the GTA.

The result

The side yard looks finished again: even colour from end to end, crisp lattice detail, and a fence that matches the stone and stucco of the house. Upkeep is a wash and a maintenance coat every couple of years.
