Peeling Deck Sanded and Stained Cedar in Markham
A raised backyard deck in Markham with stairs, wood railings and black balusters, its brown solid stain peeling off the boards in white patches. We sanded the whole deck, stairs, railings and skirting to bare wood and refinished everything in a warm cedar stain.

The deck: solid stain peeling in patches
This raised deck runs along the back of a brick home in Markham, connecting two sliding doors, with a set of stairs down to the yard, wood railings with black metal balusters and board skirting. The deck boards had been coated in a brown solid stain that was peeling badly: white and bare patches all over the surface, flaking edges and a worn, patchy look.
Sanding to bare wood
A peeling solid stain has to come off before anything new goes on, so we sanded every deck board, the stair treads and risers, the railing posts, rails and caps, and the skirting back to clean, bare wood, as the sanded photo shows.
Warm cedar stain
On the fresh wood we applied a warm cedar-tone stain to the entire structure: deck, stairs, railings and skirting. The stain soaks in and brings out the grain, and the warm colour looks great against the black balusters and the brick.
The result
A deck that looks almost new again, with an even colour from the house to the stairs, no peeling and a finish that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat every few years.
