Dance Studio Hardwood Floor Refinished in Mississauga

The hardwood floor in a busy Mississauga dance studio had turned dark grey from years of classes, scuffs and worn finish. We sanded the whole floor back to bare wood, edged along the walls, mirrors and equipment with dust extraction, and refinished it so the studio could get back to dancing.

The floor: grey, scuffed and worn through

This commercial dance studio in Mississauga has a large strip hardwood floor that takes classes every day. Over the years the finish had worn through, and dirt, rubber scuffs and foot traffic had turned the wood a dull dark grey. The first sanding pass in the before photo shows the difference straight away: a light strip of clean wood cut through the grey.

Sanding the whole studio back to bare wood

We sanded the entire floor with a drum sander, working through the grits to remove the old finish, the grey and the scuffs and bring the hardwood back to clean, bright bare wood across the whole room.

Edging along the walls, mirrors and equipment

A big sander cannot reach the last few inches along the walls, the mirror wall, the roll-up door and the electrical equipment, so we edged the perimeter with an edger connected to a backpack dust extractor. That gets the edges to match the field of the floor and keeps the dust down in a working commercial space.

Refinishing

Once the floor was sanded, edged and cleaned, we refinished it to protect the wood against daily classes and give the dancers a clean, even surface.

Hardwood floor refinishing: questions business owners ask

Can a grey, worn hardwood floor be refinished?

Usually yes. Grey hardwood is most often worn finish, ground-in dirt and surface wear, not damaged wood. Sanding removes the top layer and brings back fresh wood, as on this dance studio floor. Boards that are cracked, cupped or too thin to sand can be replaced first.

Do you refinish commercial floors like dance studios, gyms and stores?

Yes. We refinish hardwood floors in commercial spaces such as dance studios, fitness studios, offices and stores, as well as in homes and condos, and we can plan the work around your schedule to keep downtime short.

Is hardwood floor sanding dusty?

Sanding always makes dust, but we use sanders and edgers connected to dust extraction, like the backpack extractor in these photos, to collect most of it at the machine and keep the space cleaner.

How do you sand along the walls and in the corners?

We use an edger for the perimeter, along walls, mirrors and fixed equipment, so the edges get sanded to the same level as the rest of the floor instead of being left darker.

Can you sand a floor that has been refinished before?

Solid hardwood can usually be sanded several times over its life. We check how much wood is left above the tongue before we start, so the floor can be refinished again in the future.

How much does commercial hardwood floor refinishing cost?

It depends on the size of the space, the condition of the wood, the finish you choose and when the work needs to be done. We come out, look at the floor and give you a written quote.
