Red Maple Floor Refinished to Natural in Mississauga

A bedroom maple hardwood floor in Mississauga, previously stained a dark red-brown, sanded back to bare wood, trowel-filled across the whole surface to close the gaps and grain, and finished in a natural clear sealer so the pale maple shows as it is.

The floor: good maple hiding under a red stain

Under the dark red-brown stain in this Mississauga bedroom was a solid maple strip floor in very good shape. Maple is a dense, pale, fine-grained hardwood, and a heavy red stain fights everything it does well: the colour sits unevenly on the tight grain and the room reads darker and smaller than it is. The owners were renovating the room and wanted the opposite look — the floor as light and natural as possible, with no stain at all.

Sanding off the stain and old finish

Going from a dark stain to a natural finish means removing every trace of the old colour, because any stain left in the grain or in a low spot will show as a pink shadow under a clear coat. We sanded the floor back to bare maple with the drum and edge sanders, taking it through progressively finer grits so the dense maple ends up smooth without swirl marks. Sanding was done with dust containment, which matters in an occupied house. On a hardwood floor refinishing this is the step that decides how clean a natural finish looks, and maple is less forgiving than oak.

Full trowel fill with Bona Pacific Filler

The during photo shows the step most people never see: Bona Pacific Filler trowelled across the entire floor, not just spot-filled. The filler closes the small gaps between the strips and any surface checks, then the whole floor is sanded again so only what sits in the gaps remains. On a light natural floor this is what gives the clean, continuous surface in the after photo, with no dark lines between boards.

Natural clear sealer

The floor was finished with a natural waterborne sealer and clear finish coats. A natural sealer adds almost no colour, so the maple stays the pale cream you see when it is freshly sanded, with the grain and the occasional mineral streak showing through. Waterborne finishes also stay clear over time instead of ambering, so the floor keeps this look rather than yellowing. The result is the light, Scandinavian-style floor the owners were after, and it makes the room feel noticeably larger and brighter.

The result

From a dark red bedroom floor to a pale natural maple surface, ready for the trim and closet doors to go back in. Maintenance is a dry mop and a hardwood floor cleaner; a recoat down the road is a screen-and-coat, not a full sand.
