Exterior Wood Staining in North York: Garage Doors, Front Door, Porch Ceiling and Siding Refinished in C2 Guard Sugar Maple

Weathered wood garage doors, a front door, a porch ceiling and cedar siding on a North York home sanded back to bare wood and restained in C2 Guard, colour Sugar Maple, to one even tone.

Before
After

This North York home has a lot of exterior wood against pale stone: two wood garage doors, a wood front door with a sidelight, the tongue-and-groove porch ceiling and the cedar siding on the second floor. When it was new it was all one warm tone. A few years of sun and weather later, the garage doors had gone dark and blotchy where the old finish had failed, the porch ceiling had turned almost black, and the front door had faded in patches. The owners wanted the whole facade back to a single, even colour, and a finish that would last.

Why the old finish failed

Every surface told the same story: a film-forming stain that had broken down unevenly. The top boards of the garage doors, which take the most sun, had gone nearly black with mildew and oxidised finish, while the lower boards were bleached pale. On the porch ceiling, which never sees direct sun, the old coating had simply darkened. Staining over that would have locked the blotches in. The only route to an even colour was to take everything back to bare wood.

Sanding the garage doors, door, ceiling and siding

We sanded every surface by hand and with orbital sanders, board by board: both garage doors including the frames, the front door and sidelight, the full porch ceiling and the second-floor cedar siding. Sanding exterior wood properly is slow work, but it is what makes the difference between a stain job that looks even on day one and one that still looks even three years later. On the garage doors you can see the result in the during photo: the lower boards already back to clean, bright wood while the upper boards still carry the failed finish.

Choosing the stain: C2 Guard in Sugar Maple

Before committing, we put test patches of several colours on the garage door and the front door so the owners could see the options on their own wood in their own light. They chose C2 Guard in Sugar Maple: a warm, mid-tone colour that reads as natural wood against the stone rather than painted. C2 Guard is a penetrating finish, so it soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top as a film. That is why we use it on high-exposure surfaces like garage doors and siding: there is no film to peel, and the next maintenance coat goes straight on without stripping.

Staining and finishing

With the wood clean and dry, we stained the garage doors, front door, porch ceiling and siding, working the stain into the grain and back-brushing so every board took the colour evenly. The pot lights in the porch ceiling and the hardware on the doors were masked and reinstalled. The garage door frames and the door jambs were done in the same colour so there are no dark edges around the openings.

The result

Two garage doors, a front door, a porch ceiling and the siding above it, all in one continuous Sugar Maple tone against the stone. In the after photos the facade reads as it did when the house was built, with the grain showing through the colour instead of being hidden by it.

This is the same process we use on deck, fence and porch staining across Toronto and the GTA: sand to bare wood, test the colour on your wood, use a penetrating stain, and finish it so it ages evenly. If your wood garage doors, front door, siding or deck have gone grey or blotchy in North York or anywhere in the GTA, we'll come out, look at the wood and give you a written quote.
