Grey Painted Deck Sanded and Stained Brown in North York
A long raised deck along the back of a North York home, with black baluster railings, painted grey and peeling everywhere. We sanded the grey coating off the deck boards, stained them a natural brown that shows the grain and refinished the railings in a matching taupe.

The deck: grey paint peeling everywhere
This long raised deck runs along the back of a North York home, outside a wall of windows and sliding doors, with wood railings and black metal balusters overlooking the yard. The whole deck had been coated in a light grey paint or solid stain that was failing: worn through in the traffic areas, peeling at the board edges and patchy across the surface, with the railings faded too.
Sanding off the grey
A painted deck cannot simply be recoated, because the new coat peels off with the old one. We sanded the deck boards back to bare wood, removing the grey coating so the new stain could soak into the wood instead of sitting on top.
Brown stain and taupe railings
We then stained the deck boards in a natural brown tone that brings back the look of real wood grain, and refinished the railing posts, rails and caps in a warm taupe that ties in with the black balusters and the light exterior of the house.
The result
A warm, natural-looking deck instead of a peeling grey one, with no flaking paint underfoot and a finish that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat every few years.
