Deck Re-Boarded With New Pressure-Treated Decking in Oakville
A ground-level backyard deck in Oakville whose boards had rotted and split past the point of refinishing. We stripped the old decking and stairs, kept the sound frame, and installed new pressure-treated deck boards, fascia and a new three-step staircase.

The deck: past the point of sanding
Not every old deck can be rescued with sanding and stain. This ground-level deck in Oakville had been left bare for years, and the boards had gone from grey to black, with soft spots at the edges, long splits running with the grain and a stair tread that was starting to crumble. Once decking has rotted through the surface, no finish will hold and the boards become a safety problem. The frame underneath, though, was a different story: the joists and beams were dry and solid, which is common when the structure was built with better-protected lumber than the decking.
Keep the frame, replace the boards
That made this a re-decking job rather than a full rebuild, which is a large saving for the owner. We pulled every deck board, the fascia and the stair treads and risers, checked each joist for rot and movement, and then laid new 5/4 pressure-treated decking across the existing frame. The boards run on the diagonal to match the original layout and give the deck a bit of visual interest, with a clean fascia around the edge and the corner by the planter re-boarded to match.
A new staircase to the garden
The three steps down to the lawn were built new from pressure-treated stock: wide treads, solid risers and a sturdy stringer, replacing the sagging planks that were there before. The after photo shows the finished deck in its raw state, new wood with the fresh surface still bright. Hibiscus and lavender along both sides stayed put while we worked.
What comes next
New pressure-treated lumber ships wet with preservative and needs a few months to dry out before it will take stain properly. Once the surface has seasoned, a penetrating oil-based stain will lock in the colour and keep this deck from going the way of the last one. That is a straightforward deck staining visit when the time comes.
