Deck Staining in Oakville: Weathered Grey Deck, Stairs, Railings and Skirting Power Washed, Sanded and Refinished in a Warm Oil-Based Stain

The deck: a few years old and already grey

This deck sits behind a newer brick home in Oakville: a raised platform off the patio doors, wide two-level steps down to the lawn, wood railings with black metal balusters and full skirting around the base. It had never been stained, and a few seasons of sun and rain had turned the pressure-treated wood grey, with dark water marks on the floor and the railing caps starting to check. The structure was fine. It just needed the finish it should have had from the start.

Power washing and sanding

We power washed the whole deck to lift the grey surface layer and the dirt, let it dry, then sanded the floor, the steps, the railing posts, rails and caps and the skirting so the stain would soak in evenly and the raised grain from washing was smoothed back down. The black balusters and the brick were protected throughout. This prep is the part of any deck staining job that decides how even the colour comes out.

Warm oil-based stain

The deck was finished in a warm oil-based penetrating stain. It soaks into the wood rather than forming a film, so it will not peel, and the grain shows through the colour. The warm tone suits the brick and makes the black balusters stand out, so the railings look sharp instead of disappearing into grey wood. The after photo shows the floor, steps, railings and skirting all in one even colour.

The result

A deck that looks like part of a new home again, protected from UV and moisture. Maintenance from here is a wash and a refresh coat every couple of years.
