Grey Deck & Wide Stairs Refinished Golden in Oakville
A raised backyard deck in Oakville with wide wraparound stairs, a stair railing and horizontal privacy screens, its old grey stain worn off the treads. We prepped the wood and refinished the deck, stairs, railing and screens in a warm golden cedar stain.
The deck: worn grey and tired
This raised deck behind a modern Oakville bungalow has wide five-step stairs down to the interlock patio, a wood stair railing with black balusters, and horizontal board privacy screens around the deck and the air conditioner. The old light grey stain had worn through on the stair treads and the deck floor, leaving bare, weathered wood, dark streaks and pine needles ground into the surface. The grey also looked flat and cold next to the charcoal brick.
Prepping the wood
We cleaned and prepped all the surfaces, removing the worn coating and weathered fibres from the deck floor, stair treads and risers, the railing and the privacy screens, so the new stain could soak in evenly from top to bottom.
Warm golden cedar stain
The homeowners switched from grey to a warm golden cedar tone. It brightens a yard shaded by big evergreens, contrasts nicely with the dark grey brick and black window trim, and shows off the wood grain. The deck floor, all five stairs, the stair railing and the horizontal privacy screens were all done in the same colour, so the whole structure reads as one. A penetrating stain protects the wood without forming a film, so it will not peel.
The result
A bright, welcoming deck and staircase that suits the modern home, with fresh protection against sun, rain and falling needles.
