Grey Privacy Fence Refinished in Taupe in Oakville

The fence: grey, streaked and blotchy

This tall board privacy fence wraps the backyard of an Oakville home, behind garden beds and under a row of mature cedars. Years of sun, rain and tree drip had turned the boards silver-grey, with dark streaks and blotches along the bottom and on the posts. The fence was straight and solid, but it made the whole yard look tired next to the new lawn and patio.

Wood cleaner and power washing

We applied a wood cleaner to the boards, posts and rails to break down the grey surface layer, mildew and tree stains, then power washed the fence section by section, working carefully around the garden beds and lighting. The middle photo shows the fence after washing: the original cedar-brown wood is back, and you can see how much colour was hiding under the grey.

Taupe solid stain

After the wood dried, we refinished the full fence, both boards and posts, in a solid stain in a warm taupe. A solid stain gives an even, modern colour like paint but is made for exterior wood, so it covers the old weathering and colour differences between boards while still letting the wood breathe. The taupe ties in with the patio stone and gives the cedars and garden a clean, light backdrop. This is the same process behind all of our fence and deck staining work.

The result

One even colour around the whole yard, with crisp board lines and no grey streaks, and a fence protected from UV and moisture for years to come.
