Peeling Pool Deck Refinished Grey-Brown in Oakville

An elevated pool deck in Oakville with a red solid stain peeling across the floor and railing caps. The old coating was removed down to clean wood and the deck refinished in a grey-brown semi-transparent stain, with the wood railings recoated in a deep charcoal-brown to match.

The deck: red solid stain letting go everywhere

This raised deck in Oakville looks over the backyard pool, which means it takes full sun all day and plenty of wet feet in summer. It had been coated in a red-brown solid stain, and that coating was failing the way solid stains do on a horizontal surface: lifting in flakes across the walking areas, worn through to grey wood in the traffic lanes, and peeling off the railing caps where hands and the barbecue cover rub. The owners were done with the red, too. They wanted something quieter that would sit with the brick, the pavers and the black balusters.

Removing the old coating completely

A peeling solid stain cannot be covered; whatever goes on top only lasts as long as the flakes underneath. We took the floor and the railing caps down to clean wood, removing the red coating entirely rather than feathering the edges, so the new finish would have bare grain to soak into. On a deck restoration after a solid stain this is the bulk of the work, and it is what determines whether the next finish peels again in two years or wears gracefully.

Grey-brown semi-transparent stain, railings recoated to match

The floor was finished in a grey-brown semi-transparent penetrating stain. The after photo shows the difference in approach: the grain and knots read through the colour, the tone is driftwood rather than paint, and because the stain is in the wood instead of on it, it will fade evenly rather than flake. The wood railing posts and top caps were recoated in a deep charcoal-brown that ties into the existing black metal balusters, so the whole railing reads as one dark frame around the lighter floor.

The result

A pool deck that went from peeling red to a calm grey-brown, with railings that look new and a finish built to handle sun, chlorine splash and bare feet. When it needs a refresh, it is a wash and one maintenance coat, not another strip.
