Peeling Grey Deck Sanded and Stained Cedar in Pickering
A large deck with a pergola behind a Pickering home, its grey solid stain peeling off to show an older red coat underneath. We sanded the deck boards back to bare wood, stained them in a golden cedar penetrating stain and refreshed the red railings in brown.

The deck: grey solid stain peeling in layers
This large deck wraps around the back of a Pickering home, with a metal pergola, wood railings and a sliding door onto the deck. The boards had been painted over with a grey solid stain on top of an older red coat, and both layers were failing: the grey was peeling off in strips, the red was showing through in patches, and the surface looked blotchy and worn. The railings were still in a bright red solid stain.
Sanding to bare wood
Putting another solid coat on top would only peel again, so we sanded every deck board back to bare wood, removing both the grey and the red layers completely, as the sanded photo shows.
Golden cedar penetrating stain
On the clean wood we applied a golden cedar penetrating stain. Instead of forming a film that can peel, it soaks into the wood and shows off the grain and knots. The railings were refreshed in brown, replacing the old bright red so they tie in with the warm deck colour.
The result
A warm, natural-looking deck with no peeling patches, matching railings and a finish that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat every few years.
