Covered Pool Deck Restored in Richmond Hill

A two-level backyard deck in Richmond Hill with a covered section and a lower platform beside the pool. The old stain was peeling and worn grey in the traffic areas; we sanded both levels, the steps and the skirting to bare wood and refinished everything in a warm cedar-tone oil-based stain.

The deck: two levels, a roof and a pool

This Richmond Hill backyard has a big deck: an upper level under a wood-ceilinged roof off the house, steps down to a lower platform that runs along the pool, and full skirting around the open side. The roof keeps the upper deck shaded, but the stain on both levels had failed. On the lower platform beside the pool it was peeling in strips and worn through to grey wood in the walking lanes, and the upper floor had faded and gone blotchy. The owners wanted the whole deck to match the warm wood of the ceiling and posts again.

Sanding both levels to bare wood

We sanded the full deck back to clean bare wood: the covered upper floor, the door steps, the angled landing, the lower pool-side platform and the skirting. On a covered deck the slow part is working around the roof posts and along the house wall, where the edges are done by hand. The during photo shows the upper deck at that stage, pale even wood from the house to the pool. On any deck restoration this step decides whether the new finish soaks in evenly and lasts.

Warm cedar oil-based stain

The deck was finished in a warm cedar-tone oil-based penetrating stain. Oil soaks into the wood instead of forming a film, so the lower deck by the pool, which takes the most sun, splash and bare feet, will wear gradually rather than peel again. The colour was matched to the existing roof posts and tongue-and-groove ceiling, so in the after photo the deck, steps, posts and ceiling all read as one warm wood space.

The result

A covered outdoor room and pool deck that look new again, ready for summer evenings under the string lights. Maintenance is a wash in spring and a refresh coat when the colour softens, with no stripping.
