Hot Tub Deck Refinished in Dark Brown in Richmond Hill
A raised deck with a hot tub behind a Richmond Hill home backing onto a ravine, its old grey finish worn through and streaked with green mildew. We sanded the deck back to bare wood and refinished it in a rich dark brown stain.
The deck: grey, worn and growing mildew
This raised deck sits off the back of a Richmond Hill home overlooking a wooded ravine, with a hot tub set into one corner and black baluster railings around the edge. It had been finished in a light grey coating that had worn through on the walking areas. With the trees close by and splash from the hot tub, green mildew had spread along the boards near the house, and leaves and debris had stained the surface.
Sanding back to bare wood
We sanded the full deck surface, including the boards around the hot tub and along the railings, to remove the old grey coating, the mildew staining and the weathered top layer of the wood. The sanded photo shows the deck back to clean, bare pressure-treated wood, with the picture-frame board pattern clearly visible again.
Rich dark brown stain
The homeowners chose a deep, rich brown to replace the cold grey. It brings out the grain and knots, looks warm against the grey brick and the green of the ravine, and hides leaf stains and everyday wear much better than a light colour. A penetrating stain soaks into the wood rather than forming a film, so it will not peel, which matters on a deck that gets wet from the hot tub all season. Note that the stain colour deepens and evens out as it fully cures over the first days.

A warm, inviting hot tub deck with an even dark brown finish, protected against moisture, UV and mildew.
