Multi-Level Deck & Pergolas Refinished in Slate in Richmond Hill

The deck: worn through and blotchy

This is a big backyard deck in Richmond Hill: a lower level wrapped by three wide steps, an upper level with glass railings, a built-in bench, two pergolas and solid skirting all around. It had been finished in a grey solid stain years ago. On the main deck floor, where people walk, the colour had worn away to bare grey wood, while the steps, skirting and posts still had patchy, peeling stain. The result was a blotchy two-tone deck that no longer matched the house.

Sanding back to bare wood

Putting a fresh coat over worn, peeling solid stain only buys a season or two before it starts lifting again. So we sanded the deck floor, steps and skirting to remove the loose and failing coating and get back to clean, sound wood, as the sanded photo shows. The brick and windows were masked off before any work started.

Slate grey solid stain

We refinished the entire structure in one colour: both deck levels, all the steps and risers, the skirting, the bench, the railing posts and both pergolas, in a deep slate grey solid stain. A solid stain gives an even, opaque finish that hides the patchwork of old and worn wood, protects against UV and moisture, and suits the modern look the homeowners wanted against the brick. Doing every part together means no mismatched shades between the floor, stairs and pergolas.

The result

A large, complex deck that looks uniform and new again from the yard to the top of the pergolas, ready for summer evenings under the string lights.
