Deck Repair in Scarborough: Mildewed Deck Power Washed, Worn Boards Replaced and Old Lattice Swapped for Solid Wood Deck Skirting

The deck: mildew, worn boards and broken lattice

This ground-level deck sits off the sliding doors of a Scarborough home, with black metal balusters, wood posts and a two-step landing to the lawn. After years without maintenance the boards had turned grey with green mildew, some deck and step boards were worn and cupped, and the lattice around the base was sagging and broken. Lattice also lets leaves, debris and animals get under the deck.

Power washing

We started by power washing the whole deck, including the floor, steps, posts and rails, to remove the mildew and grey surface layer. The wet photo shows how much good wood was left under the weathering, which is how we confirmed the frame and most of the boards were worth keeping.

Replacing worn boards

The worn and damaged deck and step boards were pulled and replaced with new pressure-treated boards, fastened to the existing joists. Replacing only the boards that need it is far cheaper than redecking, and the frame keeps doing its job.

Solid wood deck skirting

The old lattice was removed and replaced with solid horizontal pressure-treated skirting boards, built around the full base of the deck and the steps. Solid skirting looks cleaner and more modern than lattice, will not sag or snap, and closes the space under the deck to leaves and animals. It also gives the deck a finished, built-in look from the yard. We also install mesh animal-proofing where ventilation is a concern.

The result
