New Wood Fence Stained Mahogany in Scarborough
A newer pressure-treated privacy fence in a Scarborough backyard, still in its raw, unprotected wood colour. We gave it its first coat of a rich mahogany-brown penetrating stain, boards, posts and caps included, turning it into a warm backdrop for the garden.

The fence: new wood, no protection yet
This tall board-on-board privacy fence runs along the back of a Scarborough yard, behind a stone garden bed with hydrangeas and roses. It was still fairly new and in its natural pressure-treated colour, which looks clean at first but starts to grey, check and split within a couple of seasons if the wood is left bare. The homeowners wanted to protect it early and give the yard a richer look.
Why stain a new fence
Pressure-treated wood is protected against rot, but not against sun and water on the surface. UV breaks down the top fibres and turns them grey, and repeated wetting and drying causes cracks and warping. A penetrating stain applied once the new wood has dried out shields the boards from both, so the fence stays straight and good-looking for years instead of weathering out quickly.
Rich mahogany-brown stain
We stained the full fence, both the boards and the posts, in a deep mahogany-brown penetrating stain, working carefully around the garden bed, the string lights and the post caps. The rich red-brown brings out the grain and knots, glows in the evening sun, and makes the white hydrangeas and red roses really stand out. Because it soaks into the wood rather than forming a film, it will not peel and can be refreshed easily in a few years.
The result
A fence that looks finished and high-end instead of raw, protected from day one and turned into a real feature of the backyard.
