Peeling Painted Deck Restored in Thornhill
A ground-level deck behind a Thornhill home that had been painted brown, with the paint peeling off everywhere. We sanded all the paint off down to bare wood and refinished the deck in a brown deck stain.

The deck: painted, and the paint was peeling
This low deck sits across the back of a brick home in Thornhill, with a picture-frame border and a divider board running across the middle. At some point it had been painted brown, and like most painted decks it had failed: the paint was peeling and flaking off across the whole surface and the fascia, leaving patches of bare, raw wood and a rough, patchy look.
Removing the paint
Paint traps moisture in the wood and keeps peeling, so the only proper fix is to take it all off. We sanded the deck boards, the border and the fascia boards back to bare, clean wood, removing every bit of the old paint, as the sanded photo shows.
Brown deck stain
We then refinished the whole deck in a brown deck stain made for walking surfaces. The owners kept the warm brown colour they liked, but now on a finish designed for decks instead of paint, with a clean, even look from the door to the edge.
The result
A smooth, uniform brown deck with no peeling, protected from the weather and much easier to maintain than paint.
