Cedar Deck Restoration in Toronto

A grey, weathered cedar deck with rotted boards brought back as an outdoor room: damaged cedar replaced, the whole deck and privacy screen sanded to bare wood and finished in C2 Guard, colour Ponderosa.

The deck: grey cedar, a few boards past saving

This Toronto backyard deck is cedar, and cedar is forgiving: it can go grey for years and still come back. That was mostly the case here. The floor had weathered to a flat silver-grey with dark water stains, the privacy screen and lattice had faded to match, and the whole space read as neglected rather than inviting. But a handful of boards had gone further. Where water had sat, the cedar had softened and started to rot through; the close-up photo shows the kind of board that no stain can rescue.

Replacing the rotted cedar boards

Before any sanding, we walked the deck board by board and pulled every one that was soft, split or rotted, replacing them with new cedar fastened into the existing frame. The frame itself was sound. Replacing individual boards instead of the whole deck is the most cost-effective version of deck restoration: you keep the structure, fix only what failed, and once the deck is sanded and stained the new boards disappear into the old ones.

Sanding the deck and privacy screen to bare wood

We sanded the entire deck floor back to clean cedar, taking off the grey layer and the stains and levelling the old boards with the new ones. The privacy screen, lattice top and railings were sanded too, so every surface would take the stain the same way. In the during photo you can see the floor at bare wood with the screen already finished: that is the contrast between what the deck was and what it was about to become.

C2 Guard in Ponderosa

The deck, privacy screen and railings were finished in C2 Guard, colour Ponderosa — a warm, light honey tone that keeps cedar looking like cedar instead of covering it. C2 Guard is a penetrating finish: it soaks into the wood rather than forming a film on top, which is why we recommend it for cedar decks in Toronto. There is no film to peel, UV protection is built in, and the next maintenance coat goes straight on after a clean. New boards and old boards took the colour evenly because everything had been sanded to the same surface.

The result

A deck that went from the space nobody used to the space the homeowners use every morning: an even, glowing cedar floor framed by a matching privacy screen, furnished as an outdoor room. Same deck, same frame, a few new boards and the right finish.
