Faded Deck & Built-In Bench Restored in Toronto
A two-level backyard deck in Toronto with wood railings, stairs and a built-in bench, its old stain faded and worn grey on the treads and walking areas. We sanded every surface back to fresh wood and restained the whole deck in a warm cedar tone.
The deck: faded, worn and grey on the treads
This deck behind a brick home in Toronto has an upper landing off the sliding doors, a lower level with a built-in bench, wood railings and a set of stairs down to the walkway. The old stain had faded unevenly over the years: the railings still had some colour, but the stair treads and walking areas had worn through to grey, weathered wood, so the deck looked patchy and tired.
Sanding back to fresh wood
We sanded the deck floors, stair treads and risers, the railings, posts and the built-in bench. Sanding removes the worn stain and the grey, sun-damaged surface fibres and opens up the wood so new stain soaks in evenly. The sanded photo shows how bright and clean the wood is underneath once the weathered layer is gone.
Warm cedar-tone stain
We then restained every part of the deck in a warm cedar tone: both levels, the stairs, railings and the bench. A penetrating stain soaks into the wood rather than forming a film on top, so it will not peel, and it brings out the grain while protecting the wood from UV and moisture. The warm colour suits the red brick and makes the deck feel inviting again.
The result
One even, rich colour across the whole deck, with the bench and railings matching the floor, and wood that is protected for the seasons ahead.
