Deck Staining in Toronto: Weathered Two-Level Deck, Stairs and Railings Sanded and Refinished in a Modern Greige Stain

The deck: worn red-brown stain and weathered wood

This is a big two-level deck behind a Toronto home: a landing off the house, a large lower level overlooking a garden, two sets of wide stairs with built-in step lights, solid skirting and wood railings with black metal balusters. The original red-brown stain had worn off the treads and floor, leaving a patchy mix of faded colour and grey, weathered wood, and the railings and posts had gone dull and grey.

Sanding the whole deck

We sanded both deck levels, every stair tread and riser, the skirting, and the railing caps, rails and posts, working carefully around the step lights and the black balusters. Sanding removed what was left of the old stain and the grey surface fibres and took the deck back to fresh, bright wood, as the in-progress photo shows. That gives the new stain a clean, even surface to soak into.

Modern greige stain

The homeowners wanted to move away from the dated red-brown, so we refinished the whole deck in a modern greige, a soft grey-beige that still lets the wood grain show through. It looks clean and current against the grey stucco and black trim, makes the black balusters stand out, and hides dust and pollen better than a dark colour. Floors, stairs, skirting and railings were all done in the same colour so the two levels read as one.

The result

A large deck that looks updated and cohesive, with crisp black railings, glowing step lights at night and fresh protection against sun and moisture.
