Peeling Tan Deck Sanded and Stained Redwood in Whitby
A large backyard deck in Whitby with wood railings and black metal balusters, its tan solid stain worn through and peeling across the boards. We sanded the deck and railings back to bare wood and refinished them in a rich redwood cedar-tone stain.
The deck: tan solid stain worn through and peeling
This large deck runs along the back of a brick home in Whitby, with wood railings and black metal balusters looking over the yard. It had been coated in a tan solid stain that had failed: across the whole deck the coating was worn through in the traffic areas and peeling in patches, leaving grey, weathered wood showing between the flakes. The railing caps and posts had faded too.
Sanding back to bare wood
A worn, peeling solid stain cannot simply be painted over; the new coat would lift with the old one. We sanded every deck board, the railing caps, rails and posts back to clean, bare wood, removing the old tan coating completely, as the sanded photo shows. The black metal balusters were left as they were.
Redwood cedar-tone stain
On the fresh wood we applied a rich redwood cedar-tone stain to the deck boards, railing caps, rails and posts. The warm red colour brings out the grain and makes a strong contrast with the black balusters, the white siding and the green yard.
The result
An even, rich deck colour from one end to the other, with no peeling patches or grey wood showing, and a finish that only needs a wash and a maintenance coat every few years.
