RAILING INSTALLATION FOR DECKS, PORCHES, BALCONIES & STAIRS

UCO installs new railings and replaces old ones on decks, porches, balconies and front steps across Toronto and the GTA. Every guard is measured on site and built to Ontario Building Code: 36" (900 mm) high where the deck is under 1.8 m above grade, 42" (1,070 mm) above that, with no opening wider than 4" (100 mm).
‍
Choose the material that fits the house: powder-coated aluminum for a low-maintenance modern look, tempered glass panels for an open view, or pressure-treated and cedar wood railings that match a stained deck. We handle posts, anchoring, and any deck-board or rim-joist repair the new railing needs.

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN EVERY RAILING PROJECT:

Site visit and measurements. We check post locations, deck height and structure, then confirm the style, colour and height so the written quote is final — no surprises on install day.
‍
Removal of old railings. Rotten wood, loose spindles and rusted metal come out and are hauled away. If the rim joist or deck boards under the posts have been hiding damage, we repair them before the new railing goes on.
Installation. Posts are through-bolted or surface-mounted to the structure, not just screwed into the decking. Aluminum and glass systems are assembled level and plumb; wood railings are built on site, sanded and ready for stain.
‍
Clean-up and walkthrough. We leave the deck swept, show you how each section is anchored, and back the work with our workmanship warranty. WSIB registered, $5M liability insured.

From the first visit to the final walkthrough, one crew handles your railing project. Most deck and porch railings are installed in a single day once materials are on site. Aluminum and glass systems are ordered to your measurements, so plan on a short lead time before the install date.

Questions & answers

1. Do I need a railing on my deck in Ontario?

Yes, if the deck surface is more than 24" (600 mm) above the ground — Ontario Building Code requires a guard. Below that it's optional, but most homeowners add one for safety and looks. Deck guards must be 36" high where the deck is under 1.8 m above grade and 42" above that, with no opening wider than 4".

2. Aluminum, glass or wood — which railing is best?

Aluminum is the most popular choice: powder-coated, no painting, no rust, and a 25-year-plus life. Glass gives an unobstructed view but costs more and needs regular cleaning. Wood has the lowest upfront cost and matches a stained deck, but needs re-staining every 2–3 years. We bring samples to the site visit so you can compare.

3. How long does railing installation take?

Most deck or porch railings are installed in one day. Wood railings are built on site right away. Aluminum and glass systems are ordered to your measurements, which usually adds a couple of weeks of lead time before the install date.

4. Can you replace just the railing and keep my deck?

Yes. We remove the old railing, repair any rotten deck boards or rim joists under the posts, and install the new system on your existing deck. If the structure can't safely hold a new railing, we'll tell you at the site visit and quote the repair.
