Railings, Skirting & Privacy Screens Restained in Brampton

A raised Brampton deck where the composite floor was fine but every piece of wood around it had gone grey: railings, stair stringers, posts, skirting and two tall lattice privacy screens sanded and stained back to a warm cedar tone.

The deck: composite floor, weathered wood everywhere else

This raised second-storey deck in Brampton has a composite floor, which does not need staining. Everything around it is wood, and all of it had gone grey: the railings with their black aluminum balusters, the posts, the stair stringers and treads, the skirting under the deck and two tall lattice privacy screens at the side. The homeowners did not have a deck problem, they had a trim problem — and from the yard, the trim is most of what you see.

Why railings and screens weather first

Vertical wood takes sun on one face all day and dries out fast, lattice has hundreds of small edges that shed finish early, and stair stringers get splashed from the ground. So on a deck like this the railings, screens and skirting often look years older than the floor. A wood renewal job that targets only those pieces brings the whole deck back without touching the composite boards at all.

Sanding railings, stringers, skirting and lattice

We sanded every wood surface back to clean lumber: the top and bottom rails and posts between the aluminum balusters, both stair stringers and the treads, the vertical skirting boards under the deck, and both faces of the lattice screens with their frames. Lattice is the slow part — every slat has four edges — but it is also where grey wood shows the most, so it gets the most attention. The before photos show how far gone the screens and stringers were.

Staining to one warm tone

Everything was then stained in a warm cedar tone with a penetrating exterior wood stain, which soaks into the wood rather than forming a film on top, so it weathers gradually and recoats without stripping. The railings, stairs, skirting and screens now read as one continuous colour that frames the dark composite floor and the black balusters, and the privacy screens look like a design feature again instead of a grey fence panel.

The result

From a deck that looked tired from the yard to one that looks newly built, without replacing or refinishing a single deck board. Railings, stairs, skirting and privacy screens, all brought back in one visit.
