Peeling Deck Resurfaced in Trex Composite in Etobicoke

A raised wood landing and stairs behind a brick home in Etobicoke, with stain peeling off every board and tired wood railings. We resurfaced the deck, stairs and fascia in Trex composite and replaced the railings with black aluminum, for a deck that will never need staining again.

The deck: peeling stain and worn wood railings

This raised landing sits outside the French doors of a red-brick home in Etobicoke, with a wide set of stairs down to the interlock patio. The orange solid stain was peeling off the deck boards, treads and handrails, the wood underneath was greying and splitting, and the wood railings with metal balusters looked dated next to the house. Re-staining a deck in this state means stripping every board, and the peeling would come back in a few seasons.

Why we resurfaced instead of rebuilding

The frame and footings were still sound, so there was no need to tear the whole deck down. Resurfacing keeps the existing structure and replaces everything you see and touch: the decking, stair treads and risers, fascia and railings. It costs far less than a full rebuild and is done much faster, while the result looks like a brand-new deck.

Trex composite decking, stairs and fascia

We removed the old boards and railings, checked and reinforced the framing where needed, and installed Trex composite decking on the landing in a warm brown tone that suits the red brick. The stairs got new composite treads and risers, and we wrapped the rim joists and stringers in matching composite fascia so no bare wood is left showing. Composite will not peel, splinter or rot, and it never needs sanding or staining, just an occasional wash. See more about composite deck building.

Black aluminum railings

The old wood railings were replaced with black aluminum railings on the landing and both sides of the stairs, with proper stair handrails and post covers. Aluminum is maintenance-free, rust-resistant and built to Ontario Building Code height, and the black picks up the lantern fixtures and window details on the house. More on our aluminum railing installation.

The result

A deck and stairs that look like they were built with the house: warm composite boards, crisp black railings, no peeling paint and no staining to schedule ever again.
