Old Grey Deck Rebuilt With New Boards and Railings in Newmarket
A large ground-level deck along the back of a Newmarket home, its boards grey, cracked and worn out and its old railings tired. We tore off the old decking, laid new pressure-treated deck boards, built new steps and skirting and installed new wood railings with black metal balusters.

The deck: worn-out grey boards
This large, low deck runs along the back of a brick home in Newmarket, connecting two sliding doors to the yard. The deck boards had reached the end of their life: grey, cracked, splintering and stained, with the old wood railings at the far end looking dated and tired. Refinishing would not have been enough, so the owners chose to resurface the deck.
Removing the old decking
Our crew stripped off all of the old deck boards down to the frame. With the boards off, the full structure could be checked before new decking went on, as the photo of the open frame shows.
New deck boards
We then installed new pressure-treated deck boards across the whole deck, with a picture-frame border along the edges. The photo of our crew mid-install shows the new boards going down section by section.
New steps, skirting and railings
To finish, we built new wide steps down to the lawn, closed in the sides with horizontal board skirting and installed new wood railings with black metal balusters at both ends of the deck. The black balusters keep the view open and give the deck a clean, modern look against the red brick.
The result
A solid, smooth, splinter-free deck that looks brand new, with safe steps and modern railings, ready to enjoy for years.
